MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Michelle is the Co-Owner of Interior Illusions. She has been working in the family business for over 10 years, full time. She loves helping people find beautiful and unique pieces for their homes.

Outside of work, Michelle keeps busy spending time with her two kids, and her husband.

As the co-owner of Interior Illusions alongside your mother, do you think there is a winning formula when it comes to working with family? I would say my winning formula would be assigning everyone a specific role; someone to take the lead on certain areas of the business. This is something we are currently discovering! Without these roles, I find we circle round and round waiting for someone to take action, and then it never happens. Additionally, it alleviates the overlap of everyone's energy, and inevitably saves time.

How did you get involved in the family business? I don't know how to answer this question, because I don't even know myself! I literally can't recall a time where I wasn't working at the store from a very young age. I started helping out by cleaning pins off the sewing room floors with a magnet, and then it went to answering the phones, to slowly being given more responsibility, or "real" work as I got older. I decided to study design in school, and never looked back after that.

What tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive in your day-to-day busy schedule? To do lists! I swear by them, and I have been doing them since I was young. I like a good old fashioned notebook list that I can cross out items with a pen. It makes me feel like I am accomplishing things. Plus, my memory has gone down the tubes since having kids and I literally can't remember things. Also, something very tasty for lunch! Whether it's provided by my mom, or Skip the Dishes, because I don't cook, haha. The thought of something delish can get me through a very hard day! So, there you have it, something that keeps me focused, and something that keeps me productive!

How has Knew House played a role in your life as a business owner, mother, and woman? I am still a fairly new member of Knew House, but in my few meetings I have felt heard and supported by women going through exactly the same things as me. I tend to keep a lot of my emotions inside, and keep a strong facade. After my first meeting, just listening to other people share, I felt less alone in my own personal struggles. I wasn't really sure that these meetings were going to be right for me, but each time I go it clears the doubts form my mind as I listen to others share. I am very happy to be a part of this network.
